The 2021 BMW 5 Series is here with a revived design along with renewed hybrid and plug-in hybrid choices. The mid-cycle jazz up puts the midsize sedan in a healthy position to compete against the likes of Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Genesis G80.
The refreshed design comes with only slight changes on the front and rear. The most prominent of these are smoother, more linear LED running lights, bigger kidney grille, and taillights with new L-shaped signature inlays.
Inside, you may not find the changes at first glance. However, the 2021 BMW 5 Series does come with some interior improvements. The inclusion of iDrive 7 gives us a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a similar-sized center touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both come as standard along with BMW’s navigation.
The 2021 BMW 5 Series still offers four powertrains comprising the 530i, 530e plug-in, 540i, and M550i. However, the new 48-volt mild-hybrid system for the V6 540i model makes the car more capable. This powertrain generates 335 horsepower and faster off-the-line response thanks to the latest electric assist.
The 530e plug-in hybrid houses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and electric drive powertrain to pump out 288 hp (40 hp more than the outgoing model) and 420 newton-meters of torque. Those who love insane power would be happy with the twin-turbocharged 4.4L V8 M550i xDrive that churns out a hearty 523 hp and 723 Nm of torque. This power is enough to take the car from zero to 96 km/h in only 3.6 seconds.
The 2021 BMW 5 Series starts at $54,200, which is just $300 more than the 2020 5 series. Opt for the 530e hybrid or 540i and you have to dish out $57,200 or the $61,750, respectively.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive will add $2,300 to the total. Lastly, the most powerful M550i will cost $76,800. You can order now and get your new 5 Series in July.
