The feelings of excitement are still running throw the veins of the GR Corolla fans. The rally-ready, 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive hatchback showed its face to the public on March 31st. However, that’s not the only news we lately received about the Corolla. Before the introduction of the 2022 Toyota GR Corolla, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shared a piece of news, which holds immense significance for the popular Corolla buyers.
The IIHS has awarded the Top Safety Pick+(TSP+) honour to the 2022 Corolla sedan and the hatchback models. Those who are not aware must know that the TSP+ is the top safety rating IIHS offers to a passenger car. The vehicles receive it once they pass different crash examinations after having specific safety features.
In other words, the Top Safety Pick+ accolade goes to a vehicle that receives a good rating in all the six collision tests pertaining to a vehicle’s front, side, and roof while ensuring passengers’ safety inside.
For vehicles to receive TSP+, they must have a frontal collision deterrence tech with advanced or superior grading. This rating must be true for both the vehicle as well as for pedestrian collisions. However, bear in mind that IIHS does not bind a manufacturer to offer the frontal collision avoidance system as a standard feature.
Besides collision avoidance, every car that gets top honour from the IIHS has headlights with an acceptable score.
Toyota offers the 2022 Corolla sedan at a starting price of around $21,000 in the USA. The sedan comes equipped with the automaker’s Safety Sense 2.0 system. The suite gets frontal crash detection and prevention, as well as a host of other safety tech systems.
The 2022 Corolla Hatchback model comes with all the safety systems we get in the sedan at a little higher price point i.e. $21,940. Whichever model you choose, all US-bound Corollas house a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine making 168 horsepower (125 kilowatts).
If we talk about the Corollas available in the UAE, we get it in three powertrains i.e. a 1.6-L, a 1.8-L HEV, and a 2.0-L, which is the same US customers get.
As far as the drivetrain is concerned, the power goes to the front wheels via a CVT. Toyota says the non-hybrid models deliver a combined 41 mpg fuel economy in hatchback flavour.
Since the hot GR Corolla hasn’t arrived yet, it is too early to predict its safety rating. We believe it will also receive the Top Safety Pick+ award because it is an extension of the hatchback model with extra strengthening materials and techniques applied as part of its performance enhancements. Besides, it comes equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system, which is obviously superior to the Safety Sense 2.0.
