The third-generation 2024 Lexus GX marks an evolution for the SUV, replacing its predecessor which first debuted in 2010. With its updated design, the new model boasts a bold and robust aesthetic. Additionally, it offers a range of advanced technological features. Scheduled for release in early 2024, pricing details are not currently disclosed.

Suspension & Powertrain

The 2024 GX is built on the GA-F platform, which is shared with the LX 600. Its design incorporates a front suspension system with double-wishbone architecture, while the rear employs a multi-link setup. Lexus has introduced electronic power steering for enhanced steering responsiveness both on and off the road. Additionally, customers can choose the optional Adaptive Variable Suspension with active dampers for an optimized driving experience.

During its initial release, the sole powertrain option is the GX 550. It is equipped with a 3.4-litre V6 engine utilising twin-turbo technology, generating an output of 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain is coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth gear shifts. With this configuration, the vehicle is capable of towing loads weighing up to 8,000 pounds.

The following table illustrates a comparison between the latest powertrain and its predecessor.

The GX comes with a standard drivetrain that features permanent four-wheel drive and a Torsen limited-slip center differential that can be locked. The transfer case, which is electronically controlled, allows for faster switching between 4WD-High and 4WD-Low compared to the previous model. Additionally, the Overtrail grades of the GX have the added benefit of a rear differential that can be locked.

Toyota has plans to introduce a hybrid powertrain option for the GX in the future. However, when asked about the exact release date, a spokesperson informed Motor1 that they are unable to provide a specific timeframe for the availability of the hybrid powertrain at this moment.

Design

The latest GX model boasts a strikingly different appearance from its predecessor. Its design showcases a geometric body with numerous distinct lines. The iconic spindle grille, which has become synonymous with Lexus, maintains its presence in the overall styling, albeit in a more subdued manner, as it seamlessly merges into the front fascia. The side view offers an excellent perspective of the heightened windshield. At the rear, there is a convenient power hatchback with a separate opening glass panel, complemented by a touchless sensor for automated access.

The 2024 GX will come in six different versions: Premium, Premium Plus, Luxury, Luxury Plus, Overtrail, and Overtrail Plus. The last two options are specifically designed with off-road capabilities in mind.

Customers have a range of options when it comes to the GX, with a selection of 11 attractive exterior colors to choose from. These include Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, and Nightfall Mica. For those interested in the Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades trims, they can enjoy two-tone combinations featuring a black roof and body in colours such as Atomic Silver, Incognito, Nori Green Pearl, or Earth.

The Overtrail

The Overtrail trims feature stylish black highlights on the fenders and a durable aluminium skid plate. They are equipped with 18-inch wheels and 33-inch tyres for a commanding presence. These particular versions offer advanced functionalities such as crawl control, downhill assist control, and a cutting-edge 3D multi-terrain monitor. Additionally, an innovative Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System enhances wheel articulation, enabling superior off-road capabilities. For added luxury, the Overtrail+ variant boasts exclusive seats with a soothing massage function and a power-extending cushion.

According to a spokesperson from Lexus, the Overtrail models are slated to debut alongside the other trim levels.

Interior

Although the outside of the GX has been given a tougher design compared to previous versions, the focus of the designers lies on creating a luxurious interior. Inside, you’ll find a spacious 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a significant upgrade from the analog gauges, and a small screen in the middle found in the previous model.

The infotainment display has also been enhanced to a generous 14.0 inches, a notable improvement from the current 10.3-inch screen. The software now offers convenient wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. To ensure ease of use, temperature, and audio volume can be controlled through tactile dials. The buttons for operating the transfer case and differentials are cleverly positioned behind the gearshift on the center console. Additionally, an optional head-up display is available for those interested.

The 2024 GX offers two choices for seating arrangements. One option is a six-passenger configuration with comfortable captain’s chairs in the second row. The other option accommodates seven individuals with a bench in the second row. The front chairs come with standard heating and ventilation features for added comfort. As for the second row, heating is available as an optional feature. When it comes to the interior, the upholstery of the GX combines high-quality materials. The seats are adorned with a blend of semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe in three elegant colour options: Black, Dapple Gray, and Saddle Tan. In the Overtrail models, the upholstery features a combination of either Black and Olive or Chateau and Olive, providing a sophisticated touch.

Price

We currently lack specific pricing information for the 2024 Lexus GX. As for the ongoing model, it initiates at a base price of $59,775. When Lexus unveiled the LX 600 in the year 2022, its price was slightly lower compared to the 2021 model. Taking these aspects into account, we do not expect a substantial price alteration for the upcoming GX model in relation to the current one. In the previous year, Lexus managed to distribute 29,945 units of the GX in the USA, indicating a decline of 7.9 percent from the 32,509 units delivered in 2021.

For reference, the outgoing GX demands AED 295,000.
