The BMW i3 is neither attractive nor sporty and the automaker knows it. Bentley’s design boss once said that owners of the electric car understand this fact, but they obviously didn’t purchase it for its appearance. Regardless of that, this Bimmer is definitely a late bloomer.
First unveiled in 2013, last year the company said they plan to bump the development of the i3 to meet the growing demand.
However, the production is going to seize in the U.S. in July, according to a BMW dealer bulletin, discovered by BMWBlog.
If this is true, then the company has definitely changed its course. While the production slots were limited, they didn’t make concrete efforts to increase the manufacturing pace deliberately.
The BMWBlog report also mentions that the EV might phase out from the market by 2022. It is though opposing to the earlier report that the company wants to continue production of the i3 until 2024. But we know that market demands shift very swiftly, so that might be a new strategy.
It doesn’t mean BMW will go slow with electrification. The company has already disclosed its plans to introduce the BMW i4 and iX to American customers. These EVs will go on sale at the start of next year.
