The Toyota GR86 and GR Supra sports cars boast a rich legacy spanning several decades. The Supra has captivated automotive enthusiasts since its inception in the early 1980s. Its popularity soared with the introduction of the iconic fourth generation during the mid-90s. While the GR86 and GR Supra don’t bear the same name, the GR86 owes its decade-long existence to the Sprinter/Corolla AE86. These two vehicles are set to make their debut in 2024, featuring packages that pay homage to their illustrious ancestry.
The 45th Anniversary Edition trim of the Supra honors the nameplate in its entirety, particularly drawing inspiration from the distinctive elements of the MkIV model. Embracing a shade called Mikan Blast, reminiscent of the fruit rather than the colour itself, serves as a subtle homage to the MkIV. This choice closely resembles the Plasma Orange Edition introduced in international markets, and while Toyota remains unspoken, it’s plausible that the design team may have sought inspiration from Paul Walker’s Supra featured in The Fast And The Furious.
The vehicle features sleek 19-inch wheels in a deep shade, accompanied by a stylish graphics package running alongside the door panels. Adding a touch of elegance, the rear wing is skillfully crafted with a glossy black finish, perfectly complementing the vibrant orange paint. While it may be smaller than its predecessor, the wing pays homage to the iconic MkIV Supra, albeit in a more understated manner.
Customers have the option to enhance their Supra 3.0 Premium model by including the exclusive 45th Anniversary Edition bundle, compatible with either the eight-speed automatic or the six-speed manual transmission. This upgrade maintains the powerful performance of the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, delivering an impressive 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque.
The Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition pays homage to the classic Sprinter Trueno from 1984, featuring a stylish black-and-white dual-tone design. This special edition is inspired by the iconic AE86, which gained popularity through its appearance in the anime series Initial D. Alongside its nostalgic aesthetics, the 86 is equipped with fresh 18-inch wheels, “Trueno” emblems on both the front and rear bumpers, and a sleek matte black graphics package on the door panels that complements its matte black hood.
However, in contrast to the Supra, the GR86 receives notable performance improvements. The 2024 release introduces the Performance Pack as part of the Trueno Edition, incorporating enhanced Sachs dampers and Brembo brakes. While the Performance Pack comes standard with the Trueno Edition, individuals who own GR86 models from 2022 and 2023 can also upgrade their vehicles with this option.
Furthermore, for the 2024 model, the manual variant of the GR86 features a new Active Safety Suite. This suite encompasses automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and high-beam headlight assist.
Hurry and secure one of these exclusive sports cars before they’re gone for good. Toyota plans to manufacture a mere 900 units of the Supra 45th Anniversary Edition, with half painted in eye-catching Mikan Orange and the other half in pristine Absolute Zero white. Similarly, the GR86 Trueno will have a limited run of only 860 units. Keep an eye out for their release in winter, though pricing details remain undisclosed at this time.
