Mazda6 Revives As an EV and PHEV

Mazda discontinued the 6 model from its U.S. lineup in 2021, followed by the UK last year and Japan recently. Yet, the mid-size sedan/wagon persisted in Europe and elsewhere. In China, a new 6 emerges, distinct from the old model dating back to 2012.

Introducing the EZ-6, a product of the Changan Mazda partnership, this stylish sedan comes in electric and plug-in hybrid variants. It retains the Kodo design language, featuring an illuminated grille and retractable door handles. The taillights and perhaps the headlights evoke Jaguar influences. Surprisingly, there’s an active spoiler above the rear light bar, an unexpected feature for a sedan.

The Mazda EZ-6, featuring 19-inch aero wheels, boasts a spacious panoramic glass roof and sleek frameless doors. According to sources from China, this electric/plug-in hybrid sedan shares its platform with the Changan Shenlan SL03 but elevates its status with a more luxurious interior. The interior design diverges significantly from Mazda’s international offerings, possibly due to its Chinese origins. Nevertheless, it promises a comfortable ambiance, highlighted by the intriguing full-length “floating” center console.

Accompanying the official images are preliminary details. The Mazda EZ-6 will feature rear-wheel drive as an electric variant, boasting a balanced 50:50 weight distribution and a multi-link rear suspension. Its battery pack, though unspecified, promises a range of 373 miles according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Additionally, the plug-in hybrid version is estimated to cover 621 miles before requiring a refill of gas or battery charge.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 193.7 inches in length, 74.4 inches in width, and 58.4 inches in height, slightly surpassing its predecessor. Mazda has confirmed that the next generation of the familiar 6 model won’t transition to the company’s RWD platform featuring inline-six engines. Currently, this platform is dedicated to four SUVs: CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, and CX-90.

The EZ-6 is set to hit the Chinese market after its unveiling at the Beijing Motor Show this week. However, it’s unlikely that this electric/plug-in hybrid mid-size sedan will be available in other markets.
