The Japanese automaker Mitsubishi showed a teaser of the next-generation ASX at the start of this year and gave us some technical details in June. Now the company is ready to publically reveal the 2023 ASX in Germany. The debut will take place today before the vehicle launch in Europe next year.
The new ASX will be totally new, as it won’t have anything in common with its predecessor. However, you should know it is actually a rebadged Renault Captur.
The fans have been waiting for the second-generation ASX for a long time. The first generation came in 2010, and it went on sale wearing different nameplates in specific markets. The RVR, Outlander Sport, Peugeot 4008, and Citroen C4 Aircross are some of its previous names. However, the Peugeot and Citroen models were discontinued in 2017.
The new 2023 Mitsubishi ASX will be built at Renault’s Valladolid plant in Spain – the same factory where the company builds Captur. Comparing the ASX with its Renault sibling, we expect to find minor changes outside in the shape of restyled bumpers and a new grille. The other details will probably carry over from Captur due to cost-saving measures. The interior changes will likely be minor as well.
Regarding the powertrain, the new 2023 ASX will house a turbocharged, three-cylinder 1.0-litre mill creating 91 hp. The power will go to the front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. A bigger four-cylinder 1.3-litre will also be available, generating 140 horsepower along with a more robust 158 horsepower configuration mating to a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic gearbox.
A hybrid and a plug-in hybrid will also be accessible. The Hybrid ASX will employ a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine and an electric motor. The combined output of this system will be 145 hp.
The plug-in hybrid setup will include the same 1.6-liter engine we find in the hybrid, plus two electric motors and a 10.5-kWh battery. Similar to the Captur, the ASX will not offer any diesel mill.
Besides the 2023 ASX, Mitsubishi will also introduce another rebadged Renault by the name Colt. It would actually be a reskinned Clio and will come next fall.
